Can saltwater be used as a temporary filler?

We do not use or recommend this technique since water has a much lower viscosity, or consistency than other injectable fillers, so it's not clear that a salt water trial would mimic results. The saline, after injection, is visible for half hour or so, and if you're considering this, it should be performed by a physician. Hope this helps! Dr Joseph

I would not recommend having saltwater or anything else injected into your face that has not been approved by the FDA. While saline may mimic the effects of a hyaluronic acid filler, it is quickly absorbed by the body. The best thing to do is schedule an in person consultation with an experienced aesthetic physician. 

You can have saline injected to mimic the effects of filler on a temporary basis.  However, it won't look the same as a hyaluronic based filler and the risk of infection at injecting yourself is troublesome.  Hyaluronic acid fillers can all be dissolved if you do not like the effect so please consult an expert in lip injections.  Best, Dr. Green

Hi,An injection of saline can mimic the effects of filler, but the results are very short lived (hours at most). In many ways it does not make sense to "preview" the effects of filler with saline because the hyaluronic acid fillers are reversible, so if you do not love the results, you can dissolve the filler.Best,Mehdi Sina, MD

Hi, unfortunately there is a lot of misinformation out there today. DO NOT inject yourself with anything. When dermatologists use 'saltwater' we are using a sterile saline liquid, it is completely different. You risk a severe infection or worse. Please go to a board certified dermatologist in person if you have any questions or concerns about fillers. They can go over your anatomy and what procedures would work best for you.
