Hello, great question! It is generally recommended that the plastic surgeon remove any #drains. My recommendation is that you contact your PS and arrange an appointment to have your drain #pulled and be #evaluated. Best wishes!
I personally don't use drains after and abdominoplasty but the removal is very simple. However this is not a decision you should make by yourself. Check with your surgeon.
Patients should not self remove their drains at all. Doing so may have complications that may result un need of re-opeation ( eg. if the drain breaks during removal, it may require surgical removal)surgical drains should only be removed by a licensed doctor, surgeon or nurse.
Please, this is something your surgeon or their staff should take care of. One wants to ensure it is done properly so that it is completely removed and healing well.
Hi juicycrcThank you for your question. Its best that you consult with your doctor before deciding to remove your own drain. Every office has their own protocol on what they like done and how its done. I don't advise it. Please continue with all your follow up appointments. Best of luck.
Thank you very much for your question.I have had patients remove their own drains, if they have some medical experience of have somebody with medical experience helping them. It does save a trip to the office. However, this is done very rarely.I would contact your surgeon to see what they are comfortable with. Often the issue isn't just the technical aspect of removing the drain (which is easy), but the overall examination of the area that should take place prior to the drain removal. Your doctor may want to see you for that reason.Best of luck!
Congratulations on your procedure and thanksfor sharing your question. I can appreciate your concern.Removing a drain is not rocket science. However, some experience and knowing the type of drain becomes handy when performing the task. Usually the surprise effect is helpful to decrease pain to the area. Finally, make sure that your doctor isaware of your process. He should be able to guide you best in your care.Wishing you the best in your journey
If your surgeon demonstrated how to do this, a helper can do this safely, provided the appropriate type of drain has been used. I occasionally have a patients spouse/partner/friend do this if it avoids hours sitting in a car to get to me. I would assume in New York City you are close to your surgeon, so letting it be removed in the office is the better option. All the best
No, I would (for many reasons) suggest that you have the drains removed by your plastic surgeon or his/her representative.Best wishes.
I do not let my patients remove their own drains after surgery. This is a skill that has to be mastered so that complications don't arise. Worst case scenario - the drain can break, leaving a portion inside your body. If that occurs, it would have to be removed surgically. It also should be done in a clean fashion, which most people can't do at home. And, besides, it's a little sensitive coming out, so you probably wouldn't enjoy it anyway. It's best to notify the office of your plastic surgeon that your drainage has slowed down. Usually a simple nurse visit is all that is needed. Best of luck to you!
