PTT test high, will the doctor cancel my breast augmentation surgery?

Hello and thank you for your question.  An elevated PTT can increase the bleeding risk during surgery but when it comes to breast augmentation, there is also another concern.  Excessive bleeding may increase the risk of long term complications with your breast implants, such as capsular contracture.  So, even if the surgery went well and no excessive bleeding was appreciated, the extra blood that sits on your implant could cause complications down the road.  Talk to your surgeon.

Once you get your second PTT results back I would let your PS now if it is out of range. He/she will be able to tell you if surgery will be postponed or if they are willing to do a medication and continue with surgery or not. Safe is always the best way to be.

Thank you for your question.  My strong advice is to follow the instructions given by your plastic surgeon regarding your surgery and elevated PTT.  He/she will determine if your level is acceptable to proceed.  Best of luck.

Hello, thanks for your question.  Your surgeon will need to review the test and determine if it's just outside of the normal range, or obviously abnormal.  They will be able to discuss the potential bleeding risk (if any) and whether your surgery should be delayed.

First rule in a situation like this is to repeat the test in order to rule out lab error. If the repeat test is high, your surgeon will likely have you seen by a hematologist to look for underlying cause. Everyone has your safety in mind.

PTT result should be within a normal range before having surgery to have a safe recovery. Your plastic surgeon will review the results and advise you as to your next step.  The goal is to have a safe surgery and recovery.  Good luck.

A high PTT could put you at risk for increased bleeding during surgery. Good idea to re-check it. A "little" high may be of "little" concern, and hopefully with the re-check it will come out normal. If not, not a bad idea to have a hematologist evaluate you to clear you for surgery.I hope this helps.- Dr. Bryson Richards 

Partial thromboplastin time (PTT) indicates the time it takes your blood to clot.  Your plastic surgeon may request that a hematologist evaluate you and provide clearance before surgery if the values are high.   There are many factors to consider prior to placing a patient on blood thinners prior to surgery or after surgery. However, the PPT may be within range for the plastic surgeon and anesthesiologist to feel comfortable with proceeding with the surgery.  It is important that the plastic surgeon has performed many breast augmentation procedures and is very efficient to minimize time under general anesthesia.Kenneth Hughes, MD, Board Certified Plastic SurgeonLos Angeles, CA

Your surgeon will need to review the results and find out if it's meaningful or not.  If so, sometimes, it's worth repeating, since sometimes tests have errors themselves.
