Fluid buildup in pelvis after tumescent lipo?

Question

I just got liposuction today (very small amount) and have felt no pain or discomfort. I didn't have a compression garment so I used a waist trainer for the time being. I was surprised to find that I have no draining of fluid at all (my incisions were left unstitched) however my pelvic area is very swollen. I'm worried that I might have squeezed all the fluid down to my pelvis by just compressing my abdomen. It definitely feels squishy like it's not just swollen, but I'm just not sure if this is normal.

Some swelling is normal after liposuction.At the same time, please make sure that you see your doctor with your questions as, in some cases, the swelling may represent other complications.

It is normal to have swelling after liposuction and it typically descends because of gravity. I would recommend that you check with your plastic surgeon to see if it is normal or if you may have a small fluid collection called a seroma.

All swelling goes south, because of gravity, and pools in the pubic area.  If you did not wear a garment that compresses the pubic area, and you didn't, then all of the swelling will go straight there.  Don't worry, it is temporary and will resolve in 3-6 months.

It's perfectly normal to have fluid in the lower abdomen/pelvic (mons pubis) area after liposuction. It drifts there by gravity. Wearing a compression garment is helpful. I also have my patients gently massage to aid the movement of the fluid away from the area, and it will dissipate over time. If you have any concerns about what you're experiencing be sure to check with your surgeon for advice.

It is very common to have swelling to the pelvis or mons pubis after liposuction to the abdomen.  I have my patients wear spanx type underwear or bike shorts for compression to help relieve the swelling to the area.

It is normal to have edema/swelling after liposuction.  Due to the dependent position, your lower abdomen and mons/pelvis will have more swelling.  Your swelling may persist up to 3-6 months.  Please follow your plastic surgeon's post-operative instructions.  You will need massaging and compression garment.  Good luck with your recovery.
