I'm getting tumescent liposuction done in a month on both my lower and upper legs including around my calves and ankles. I'm extremely nervous about complications such as blood clots and embolism etc as I have done too much Googling. Will being in good health help decrease these risks or are these very real and common complications of this procedure? I am 29, weigh 125 pounds and not smoke. Thank you.
Answer: Preventing deep vein thrombosis (DVT) after liposuction The most important way to prevent post op DVT is early ambulation. Getting up and walking for 5-10 minutes every hour after surgery and performing ankle and knee exercises while lying down will help to prevent DVT. All patients before surgery will have a thrombosis risk assessment performed and a value assigned. Post op treatment to prevent DVT will be based on this value. Some patients even need to take blood thinners after their procedure if the risk is high enough.Exercising before surgery is nice, but ambulating after surgery is better!Good Luck!

Answer: Being in good health is always good. Hi, there. It is always good to be healthy and medically optimized before any surgery. Your concern about DVT (blood clot) and pulmonary embolism is real; however, the risk is small. Please share your concern with your plastic surgeon. I am sure that your plastic surgeon will take a measure to prevent DVT during your surgery. It will be important for you to be active/ambulatory to prevent DVT post-operatively as well. Best wishes with your surgery and recovery! - Dr. Kim
