In order to be a good candidate for fat transfer, you want to let the scar tissue heal up and become mature before considering the second procedure. Most plastic surgeons will probably say that’s about six months. Each plastic surgeon will have their own recommendations. Delivering Consistent quality, liposuction, and fat transfer (both procedures are always done together) Is more difficult than most people realize. The number of plastic surgeons who mastered this procedure is relatively small. The fact that providers offer the procedure and have board certification does not mean they’re good at it. Fat transfer can consistently increase breast size by 1/2 cup or about 50% increase in breast size one done by sufficiently skilled and experienced provider. Occasionally results will be slightly more impressive, but that’s the best patience should expect from one round of fat transfer. Early transfer results can look very impressive but do not in anyway represent long-term final results. Whenever reviewing before, and after pictures always confirm the timeframe of when after pictures were taken. After pictures are not representative until at least 3 to 6 months from the date of surgery. If results look too good to be true on before and after pictures, then they probably are.Finding the right provider for this kind of work is more difficult than most people realize. Generally, speaking implant augmentation is more successful, consistent, and can potentially give better aesthetic outcomes. For those who are opposed to implant augmentation fat transfer may be a reasonable alternative, especially if you’re looking for a subtle increase in breast size without a significant change in breast shape. To find the right provider, I suggest patient’s schedule multiple in person consultations with local plastic surgeons who seem to have extensive experience with this procedure. Recognize that in the hands of a provider who does not have sufficient skill with either liposuction or fat transfer results can be potentially disfiguring and disappointing. Provider selection is by far the most important variable. When in doubt, slow down and schedule more consultations. Best, Mats Hagstrom MD
