Surgical drains are used whenever there is high chance that excess fluid will collect underneath the site of the monsplasty. This is related to the amount of dissection, the size of the area, how bloodless the surgical field appears at the time of surgery, and how much suturing is done in the deepest layers. Most larger monsplasty procedures require drains. Some mini monsplasty procedures do not.
Drains are important to prevent fluid from accumulating, if fluid accumulates it is a complication of surgery and it should be drained with needles, it is better to have drains for a few days and avoid punctures, as to whether or not it should be left, it will depend on the technique used by the surgeon
MONSPLASTY operations are not like major operations such as tummy tuck, so it is not always necessary to put a drain. If there is no suspicion of bleeding, it may not be placed. if the doctor considers it appropriate... If a tight bandage or tight corset is used and the doctor sees no risk, the drain may not always be needed
thank you for posting this question. If a monsplasty is done as a single procedure, not in combination with a lipoabdominoplasty for a example, your surgeon probably does not have to use drains. Often additional sutures to occlude the deadspace can help avoiding postoperative fluid collection. But every patient is different, with a different healing process. I hope this helps.
Unlike a full tummy tuck where you may need to do extensive undermining of the skin, it is not required for a Monsplasty or mini TT. Therefore, rarely if ever, will you need to put drains in a Monsplasty or mini TT.
Placing a surgical drain after a monsplasty depends on how extensiive the dissection was done. I typical will only drain manually once. If the fluid recollects, I will place a drain in. I will not remove the drain until the drainage is completely resolved.
Use of drains will vary based on surgeon and procedure. Their purpose is to collect fluids as the body heals from surgery. A monsplasty that is performed as a standalone procedure may not require drains. If used, the drain will be removed once the fluid collections reaches a certain threshold, which is often a few days to a week.
Drains help minimize fluid buildup after surgery and can improve results. Most surgeons use 20-30 cc of drainage in a 24 hour period to determine when the drains are removed.
