When will weight plateau after Lipo?

Question

I had Lipo done on Tuesday to 5 areas 3.2kg’s was removed. I am very health and fitness conscious and it’s really important I maintain my weight once the swelling has gone. The day after surgery I weighed 600g more than before (which I expected). How long should I expect the 3.2kg of water retention to disappear so I can have a benchmark to maintain my weight at?

Thanks for your question. Healing after liposuction is usually pretty straight forward.  There is a process of swelling and bruising that peaks at 3 days after surgery and then undergoes the first stage of major resolution in the first 2 weeks after surgery.  The lateer phase of healing takes place over the 2-3 months after surgery where everything really settles and softens.  It is after this time that we are getting close to the final result, though this varies patient to patient.

Swelling can last as long as six months.  Every patient is different, and every surgery is different. You will likely only lose a few pounds from the liposuction procedures.  The number of inches lost will depend a great deal on your choice of surgeon.  The weight generally remains very similar. Maintaining a stable weight after liposuction will ensure that the results are long-lasting.   I recommend that my patients eat a healthy balanced diet, with an emphasis on protein, fresh vegetables, and whole grains with limited fat, carbo, sugar, and alcohol. Kenneth Hughes, MD, ABPS Board Certified Plastic SurgeonLos Angeles, CA

It’s important to understand that liposuction is not a tool for weight loss. It is a body contouring procedure that provides additional toning and sculpting to the treatment region. In general, the modest amount of fat removed during liposuction shouldn’t have a significant impact on your weight. In order to maintain your results, you will need to maintain a steady weight moving forward. This is best accomplished by eating a healthy diet and exercising regularly once you’ve healed enough to resume exercise.
  
That being said, it is common to experience some swelling after liposuction, and this may be impacting your appearance right now. Most swelling should subside within the first few weeks of recovery, but it may take up to six months for all swelling to go away and for your final results to become visible.

elasrofton I appreciate your concern, however liposuction is not a weight-loss tool and results should not be measured in amount of pounds lost, but rather contour improvement. It is to your advantage that you  follow such a strict diet and exercise regimen, and this will certainly contribute to your final result. I would use your weight just prior to your operation as a benchmark, and just try not to gain any weight as your swelling results. While much of your swelling will resolve after the first 4 to 6 weeks, it can take as long as six months for all swelling to dissipate, allowing you to realize your final result. Try to stay patient and positive And follow up with your plastic surgeon. Good luck.

You are still early on the healing process, it can take up to six months to see your final results, so please be patient. At the stage you are in, inflammation is normal.
