I am 2 days post op from Smart Lipo in my upper and lower abdomen and flanks. What is the best post op care treatment? (photo)

How soon should I get it done? My doctor thinks i should wait a week but i can feel myself swelling and feel as if there is still fluid left and my incisions are now closed. I really want the best results, what happens if all the fluid does not drain out properly?

Post op lymphatic massages will help get rid of the excess fluid that is stagnant in the abdomen.  I recommend my patients start at day 3-7 depending on if they are able to tolerate some of the discomfort associated with early intervention lymphatic massage and ultrasound therapy.  I have never had one person say they did not feel better after even one session of a MLD.  Wearing your compression garment and low sodium diet will also help you post op!Good luck

It’s highly advisable to wear a compression garment to control the swelling that occurs after smart lipo. The duration for wearing the garments will depend on your doctors’ recommendations and the type of procedure you undergo.

I like my patients to start lymphatic massage early on, this helps reduce bruising and swelling. I also like patients to get up and move as soon as possible. Limiting salt intake and wearing compression garments the proper way help as well!

Massage is very effective for getting fluid out and keeping swelling to a minimum. Doing it early and often is best because that's when you've got the most fluid in the tissues. The longer the fluid sits, the higher the chance that it will start to harden. Once hardened, it creates lumps that take longer to dissipate. For that reason, I usually recommend starting the day after the procedure. Waiting a week or longer lets the fluid harden and makes the massages less effective. The first few will be uncomfortable, but taking an anti-inflammatory pill will make it tolerable.

It is important to follow your post operative instructions that were likely provided to you by the office you had your procedure performed at. Most surgeons recommend wearing a compression garment 24/7 for at least 1-2 weeks following your SmartLipo procedure. It may take some time for your body to absorb excess fluid. If approved by your operating surgeon, lymphatic drainage massages may be helpful to accelerate your healing process by moving the excess fluid out of your body. Remember to allow your body some time to heal from you procedure and to keep an open line of communication open with your operating doctor’s office.

it is extremely likely that you have significant fluid build up in your abdomen. It is most likely just normal swelling and fluid retention that will just go away with time. Doing gentle massage on the treated areas (you can do this yourself and don't need a professional) and being up and active is the best way to speed up your healing. Mostly be patient since you will improve for 6 months.david berman md
