Are drug tests required for rhinoplasty?

My protocol for pretesting is more extensive than a blood count.  It is important to know that your clotting factors are within normal limits, among other things.  On occasion, we learn things about a patient’s medical conditions of which they were unaware, especially in an era in which patients eschew internists for first med locations.  Is your concern using illegal drugs or opiates? If so, you should be candid with your surgeon as many such medications or drugs can negatively impact the anesthesia and your recovery.

Drug tests are not required for rhinoplasty in our practice. Selective blood tests can be performed  when patients have  certain medical conditions

Most plastic surgeons do not routinely do drug testing prior to surgery, unless he or she suspects drug use.  It is VERY important that you share any drug use and are honest with your surgeon about your social history, i.e. drinking, drug use, smoking.  

You are best to ask your surgeon. Each surgeon is different and it depends upon the patient's overall medical condition.

Drug tests are not normally tests done prior to elective surgery unless there is a suspicion of drug use that could adversely affect the safety of a surgery.  It also it imperative to be honest with your doctor so that he or she could provide the most accurate evaluation and prescribe the safest course through a surgery, even if it means drug testing or not recommending surgery.
