6 days post-op: sutures removed and bleeding the next day. Is the incision going to split open? (Photo)

Question

I had Rhinoplasty sutures removed from my columella at post op day 6 and it is slightly bleeding a day later. Not a lot, there was initial bleeding on the day when the suture was removed and the nurse applied some type of liquid bandaid sterile strip on it. I think I see both dry blood and bright blood underneath it. Is it ok? What are the chances of my columella incision spitting open?

This incision usually heals without any complications.  This area is well vascularized and can bleed easily if there is a tiny opening.  I would place antibiotic ointment on the gauze until it falls off or can be removed gently without inciting further bleeding.

Hi Avamy,Having a little bleeding from the incision site after suture removal is normal. The incision is covered by a stern-strip, so we cannot see the incision, but it is rare for the incision to open. I have never seen it happen.Please let us know if you have any questions or concerns!

Dear Ivamy,steri strips are covering your wound so it is impossible to see how it looks. Minor bleeding after removing of sutures is normal and should not cause any problem. If you are concerned, you can consult your plastic surgeon.

Without knowing your medical history, etc. and the wound area covered by your steristrips it is impossible to provide you with an accurate assessment of your situation. Nevertheless, the bleeding that you described can be normal. Bright red blood can be precipitated by bending, straining and vigorous activities. It would be extremely unusual for your incision to split apart.Given your concerns, you should contact your surgeon and discuss this with him/her.Steven Turkeltaub, MD
