I’ve been wanting to get chin liposuction for awhile! I thought it would be one incision under the chin and go in through there but someone said that they can also go in from behind the ear under the jaw for better results and if it’s right for you. Is this safe? Is this a greater chance of hurting any nerves in your face? Or losing sensitivity?
Answer: Fat in the right places This area can have persistent fat and platysmal bands in even very thin patients. So it is all about having fat in the right places. Sometimes we even move this fat to another area to help define the jawline. Approaching the jaw line from behind the ear is safe if the surgeon does this case frequently. Also must of us that do this procedure also do larger cases involving areas of the face so we know the anatomy and are comfortable approach the face from different areas. These fat pockets can be tricky and often times a dual approach is helpful. Not always though so we would need to do a good physical exam first. What we do is remove that layer of fat beneath the skin and allow the skin to fibrose to the muscle of the neck. The muscles of the neck and tongue in conjunction with the only free floating bone in the body (the hyoid bone) are the limitations of what you are trying to obtain. After palpating that bone and those muscles you could get a better idea of what can be obtained. Hope this helps. Best of luck, DrC

Answer: Chin lipo safety of any procedure is dependent on skill and experience of the doctor performing the procedure. There are lots of different doctors with different credentials and expertise with variable years of experience. Not all doctors have same level of aesthetic sense nor surgical artistic hands.

Answer: Liposuction under the chin. If you have good skin tone and the fat is not excessive, liposuction can be done in the office under local anesthesia going through a small 1/8 of an inch opening under the chin. Depending on the patient and in order to do it in a crisscross fashion and get smoother results, two more incisions are made behind the earlobes. If there is a lot of excessive skin, some skin would need to be removed placing the scar behind the ear. As far as safety is concerned, in expert hands, all these facial procedures are safe. I have been doing liposuction, facelifts, brow lifts, and eyelid surgery for over thirty years and never had a nerve injury. Complications can happen after any surgery and you are normally given a consent form listing all of them, but the expertise of the surgeon is your best insurance against complications.

Answer: Liposuction Liposuction done by an experienced facial plastic surgeon is extremely safe. Depending on your situation liposuction may be performed with one small incision under the chin or there may be addition small incisions behind the earlobes. Nerve damage is always a risk with all surgeries, but is very rare and is unlikely in the hands of an experienced surgeon.
