Is smelling Botox after injection normal?

Question

After getting Botox injections (forehead, crows feet and between the eyes) I could smell it. It was really strong smelling. I'm worried that it seeped out of my skin instead of going into the muscle. This wasn't my first Botox procedure - I've never smelled it like that before. Is it normal?

Dear Sabatini,Thank you for your question. Botox is ordorless. You most likely smelt the antiseptic or a numbing cream that is often used before injections.

Botox has no smell and the liquid that is used to dilute it should have no odor.  Perhaps they used something like an antiseptic before the treatment to sterilize the skin which had a strong odor.  You should be fine.

Botox is odorless. It may be you smelled the antiseptic or analgesic cream used. Keep in mind, it will take 1-2 weeks for your final results with Botox. Best, Dr. Emer

Botox does not have an odor but it is possible your physician used something to cleanse your skin before the injection, and that could be the cause of any odor.  I would check with your physician to see what might have been used that could have caused the odor you smelled.

Hello Sabatini,Thank you for your question. Botox is colorless and odorless as is the solution we use to reconstitute it. More than likely the smell would be from the type of anti-septic or analgesic cream (sometimes used) prior to the injections. Be well.

Botox does not have an odor.  My guess is that you were smelling something that was used on your skin before or after the injection or something else that was  being used in the office.  Perhaps it was a different skin cleansing solution than was used  in the past.  Regards, Dr. D
