I got my rhinoplasty done a month ago and when the cast was removed, it was small, the tip was nicely shaped, and had a gorgeous slope on the bridge. Fast forward about 15 days later, my nose lost that pretty, small shape and completely changed. Its big, puffy, and the slope isn’t curved anymore. My tip is round and awkward looking. Its as if my nose gets bigger everyday...is this normal? What can I do? I’m desperate and upset that it got ruined in the process or something.

Answer: Unhappy at one month When the splint first comes off, for a very brief time you get glimpse of an approximation of the outcome of the surgery. Then very quickly the tissues which were compressed by the tape and splint fill up with fluid (swelling). This is the swelling that takes many months to completely resolve. Try to be patient and let the healing occur. With time your nose will probably become smaller and more refined. If you are very concerned ask your surgeon about it. Good luck.

Answer: Swelling at 1 month post rhinoplasty Hi noserhino13,The famous singer Tom Petty put it best when he said that "the waiting is the hardest part." It certainly is. Depending on what was done and each patient's own skin thickness and healing characteristics, there can be great variability in swelling. In general, it takes a year for all of the swelling to go away, but the vast majority of it is gone within the first 2-4 weeks. It will get better for sure. You should also discuss your concerns with your surgeon. If applicable, sometimes you can get a steroid shot that may reduce the swelling faster.Have a great day!Michael M. Kim, MD
