I had liposuction to my hips and outer thighs two years ago and have kept my weight stable. Recently I have gained 2kg (4.4 lbs) following an operation (I'm 165cm, medium/small build, usually weighing 132 lbs). I'm worried if this weight gain will ruin my liposuction results from 2 years ago and distort my shape. If so when I lose the weight should I return to my normal shape (which I achieved from liposuction) or keep this distorted shape? Thank you for your advice. It is very much appreciated.

Answer: Weight Gain After Liposuction Once fat is removed, it does not return; however, other fat cells in your body will swell if you take in more calories than you burn. It is always better to exercise and eat a healthy diet no matter if you are having surgery or not. Many of my patients find that the results of their liposuction leave them looking so good that they are inspired to make the big changes -- the changes that really count -- in diet and lifestyle. The goal of liposuction (or CoolSculpting, which is the only other FDA-approved way to permanently remove fat) is to even out your fat distribution. This is to say that you shouldn't have disproportionate around your abdomen, hips, or legs or thighs as compared to the rest of your body. Once this fat is removed, a slight weight gain -- though not desirable -- should not ruin the results, but I encourage you to stay healthy and enjoy not only looking better, but feeling better.

Answer: Minor weight gain will not significantly affect liposuction results. Minor fluctuations in weight should have no significant effect on the result from liposuction. Occasionally, patients to put on large amounts of weight might need to have an area redone.
