Eye won't shut all the way after upper eyelid. Dry eyes.

Question

Ok, this is my third post, my Sergeon is 5 hours away. And I have told him about my eye problems, etc. Dry eyes and blurry - he won't recommend any otc med's to help ease the dryness unless I go back to see him, which I can't at this time. Is there any otc med to help dry eye and keep them shut at night? I know its still swelling so can't close them but the dry eye is causing blurriness and affecting my daily activities. Thank you in advance.

It is unfortunate that you are unable to close your eyes after your eyelid surgery, but this should improve with more time.  There is an over the counter eye drop called Artificial Tears that can be used to help lubricate the eyes and improve the dryness.  It may also be helpful to use an over the counter eye lubricating ointment at night when you sleep.

If your eyes are dry and irritated your surgeon should be able to suggest over the counter measures such as drops during the day, and ointment for nighttime use. Give him a call again and try to keep a followup appointment  for care.

Dear Elle: Rest assured that your eyelid issues will improve as the swelling subsides. Until then, you will be much more comfortable if you maintain the moisture in your eyes with regular Refresh type eyedrops throughout the day, Refresh PM lubricant (Lacrilube) at night to protect the eyes, avoid sleeping under a fan or AC vent, using a humidifier in your bedroom if  you have a heater on (heaters decrease the humidity in the air), and possibly use a "daytime sleeper's mask" to keep the air from drying our your eyes while you sleep. Be sure to keep in contact with your surgeon, and consult with an ophthalmologist to make sure your corneas are not drying out. Good luck!John Standefer MD
