Silicone implants under 22. Is it true that it is illegal to get them under the age of 21?

You are correct, they are FDA approved for those 22 and older. The decision to approve by age was not medically based. Regardless, you can rest assure that it's legal and you will enjoy the full manufacturer's warrantee.

the two main types of implants are silicone and saline. The shell of the implants can be either textured (which reduces capsular contracture) or smooth. A textured implant sometimes requires a larger incision. The shape of the implant can be either round or tear drop shaped (gummy bear). Both have their advantages and disadvantages.
The different types of implant offer different pros and cons. For instance, the pros of silicone implants are that they look and feel more natural and ripple less.
On the other hand, the pros of saline implants are that they do not require as large of an incision as silicone, less expensive, they have less incidence of capsular contracture (scarring around the implant), one can tell immediately if there is a rupture, the size can be slightly adjusted, and they can be used for women less than 22 years of age.

The FDA recommend that silicone implants be used in women who are at least 22 years old. However, it is not illegal to use them under age 22. Some physicians may not choose to do so in women under 22. Some will have you sign a release stating that you know it is not recommended, and you choose to use silicone anyway.

Patients under the age of 22 can receive silicone breast implants. This is not illegal, but is rather considered "off label" use. Schedule a consultation with a board certified plastic surgeon near you to learn more.

In my practice, more than 30 years of plastic surgery, I would not do an off label breast implant.

You are correct. The FDA warns using implant of silicone are "off label" use. That also means you negate the implant manufacturer's warranty for replacement if a deflation occurs plus other warranty options. So is it worth the loss of a warranty? The next issue is you called a chop shop clinic in Miami! They do not wish to be involved if you have a post operative issue. Try private practice boarded Plastic Surgeons who are willing to implant silicone implants 'off label'. Fees are usually much higher btw like $8,000+

You can legally place silicone implants but would have to have the patient sign an informed consent stating that they understand it is an "off-label" utilization of the implants.

For reasons unknown to many, the FDA determined silicone implants safe based upon a study where the participants were 22 years old or older. That's why! The FDA did NOT say that it is unsafe to undergo silicone breast augmentation below the age of 22.
It is not illegal to perform or to undergo silicone breast augmentation below age 22 in the USA. However, implant warranties will most likely be voided. Get a second opinion if you are still interested.
