Can I pierce my septum after rhinoplasty? If so, in how long after surgery?

I got my first rhinoplasty a little over a year ago.But, I got a revision by the same doctor 5 months ago. I am dying to get my septum pierced but I am not sure if I can. My rhinoplasty was pure esthetic I didn't have an issue with my nose.

Thanks for the question. You shouldn't have piercings for at least 2-4 months. Then, if you talk to your surgeon and get approval, there is no obstacle to having a piercing. I wish you all the best.

One of the bigger issues regarding piercing a septum is the possibility of infection. Although skin infections can be treated easily, an infection of cartilage is more difficult. There are times in rhinoplasty surgery where permanent sutures may be placed also in this region. One should discuss with one surgeon the details of of his or her surgery and the possible presence of stitches or cartilage grafts that could be affected by piercing. Your surgeon will be able to discuss with you the advisability of this.

I would avoid piercing your septum. Whether you had cartilage harvested for your rhinoplasty or not, there are risks of infection which would seem ill-advised after making the effort from two prior rhinoplasty procedures.

Always want to be cautious when it comes to foreign substances in your nose, especially after a rhinoplasty.   You run the risk of infection that could have devastating consequences.  One of which could be a saddle nose deformity.  Additionally if septal work was done intraoperatively and than a piercing is placed it can lead to a septal perforationProceed with cautionregards

Depending on where you get your septum pierced will determine if it can be safely performed. Only your surgeon who did the surgery will know with great detail the contents of your septum and will be able to safely make a decision as to the safety of the piercing.
