Is it necessary to get massages after a tummy tuck to drain fluid?

Massages after tummy tuck and/or other operations are not intended to drain fluid. I am not a user of drains. Massage helps soften the scar.

I do not recommend massages after tummy tuck.  The drains are there to remove the fluid that builds up under the skin.  It takes months before the healing of the abdominal wall should be subjected to message.

No. Although not necessary, I always recommend a series of lymphatic massages following tummy tuck or liposuction. It's best to begin earlier than late. The idea is not to drain fluid but rather help the lymphatic system function more efficiently and thereby resolving swelling sooner. Good luck

Massage has no effect on the outcome of and abdominoplasty and if done to vigorously can even cause problems.

The answer is no. Drain placement for 7-14 days typically is all that is needed to prevent a seroma aftera a Tummy Tuck procedure.  I also use compression garments in my practice to help the skin flap "stick" down to the underlying fascia.  

A massage does not drain fluid.  Some surgeons recommend postoperative massage in order to break up potential scarring and increase circulation to the area that is healing.  While it may have some benefits, a massage is certainly not "necessary."

Find out what type of massage they are referring too...A general massage that you might get for relaxation is contraindicated in my opinion as this might inhibit the healing process of the subcutaneous flap and lead to seroma formation.  However, a mild lymphatic massage does help with drainage as the lymphatic system will be a bit slow to drain after a tummy tuck.  Good luck and take care.
