What cream lotion gel etc can I rub on my scar for the itchy dryness? (photo)

Itching along surgical incisions is a common problem, that is typically cured with a simple moisturizer.  There are many over-the-counter moisturizers that are effective.  I would use one that you've had success with before with other areas of skin dryness.  If itching persists, a simple Benadryl cream will work as well.  Simpler and cheaper creams and lotions are often times as effective as the more expensive name brand items...For long term care, and overall scar improvement, once the itching improves, I would recommend a silicone-based scar treatment.  There are many OTC or online formulation to choose from.Good luck and best wishes.Mark K Markarian, MD, MSPHHarvard-trained Aesthetic Plastic Surgeon 

Thank you for your question and congratulations on your procedure!  Assuming your surgeon has permitted creams or lotions on your incisions I recommend Aquaphor to patients to improve their scar quality and dryness.  If itching remains a large problem, I would recommend BioCorneum hydrocortisone cream and/or BioCorneum scar gel to help soften your scar, protect if from UV radiation and improve the itch.  Hope that this helps. 

It is completely normal to have itchy dry skin post surgery because the normal function of the skin has been put "on the back burner" in order to help heal the injured areas of surgery. Recommend during this period of 3-4 weeks to use a simple moisturizer such Vaseline or any other plain petroleum product until normal skin function returns. Talk to your board certified plastic surgeon. 

Always best t ask your chosen operative surgeon his recommendations! I prefer a lanolin based cream. Over the counter products might be Ok. I use DefensAge products in my office..
