Compression garment after abdominal liposuction: Skin is folding

Question

I have a compression garment on after abdominal liposuction. I have noted that on some parts (specially midsection of the abdoment) my skin is folding, specially when I seat. Am not sure if this is entirely the compression grament's fault. Will this disapper or do I need to wear something else to make this fold go away?

I would make sure your compression garment is lying smoothly by making frequent adjustments to it throughout the day. I am not sure how far post-op you are, but you will continue to experience appearance changes over months. The contours are changing and early-on, irregularities are not permanent. Swelling resolves, scar tissue builds up and gradually resolves, and the skin is also retracting,  so that contours continue to change and improve even up to 6 months to 1 year after surgery. I will often line a garment with Reston Foam padding which tends to keep the garment smooth, providing a nice even compression on the treated area. Trying to avoid pressure points on the midsection in the same area during the day will help.

Depending upon the amount of excess skin that you have, it might be impossible to find a garment that will prevent any "folding" of the skin when you seated. Most patients that use compression garments will see some indentations of the skin immediately after the garment is removed. These small depressions and wrinkles will resolve themselves with just time as the swelling and edema resolves.

If the garment is contributing to folding of the skin it should be readjusted or even changed. From your description it's difficult to say whether this is actually the case.

There are many different forms of liposuction garment and when a patient is especially uncomfortable, I encourage him or her to use a different brand.  Regarding compression in general, this is one of those questions that does not have an absolute answer. Each surgeon approaches it differently. As a result, it is reasonable to assume that there is some wiggle room.  Nonetheless, I think the best answer in individual cases like this will come from the plastic surgeon who performed your procedure.
