Is my compression garment causing worse swelling? (photo)

Your question is a good one that is often asked. Most likely the compression garment is not causing the problem or the swelling.Swelling after all surgery is common. After a mini tummy tuck, this is the location where you are typically seeing the swelling occur. A physical examination is critical. This will assess if you have blood (a hematoma), fluid "in" the tissue, or excess fluid that is called a seroma. They will be treated differently as I will review.A hematoma is a collection of blood. This is usually associated with excessive bruising and discoloration. Any drainage, like into a surgical drain, would often be very dark and thick. This might need surgical drainage.A seroma is excess fluid that has accumulated out of the tissue. On examination it wiggles like a water bed. Aspiration would be necessary and sometimes drain placement. It usually responds to treatment very well.Finally, most people just have fluid or swelling that is "in" the tissue. This is treated with rest, relaxation, and pressure. Although some doctors don't recommend the garments, the vast majority of doctors do recommend them. They need to be moderately tight but not strangulating. Maybe yours could be adjusted or find a better fitting one.Mini tummy tucks are classic for swelling in this area. Get examined to make sure nothing needs to be done. If it's just normal swelling, than the pressure of the garment is good advise.Finally, the garment has other benefits besides swelling. Hope this helps.Dr Chris Saunders
