It sounds like you are already aware of the worst possible scenario.It's important to look at risks of complications in terms of perspectives and probabilities.Life is full of risks and we make decisions every day but can lead to potential devastating outcomes.I have never had a patient die in my 20 years of medical practice as a plastic surgeon.I have however had several friends die in car accidents.I have taken care of thousands of patients.I probably don't have more than 50 friends or acquaintances.I would venture to say that driving a car is by far more dangerous than having an elective cosmetic procedure.Death from cosmetic surgery is exceedingly rare but ca gain wide media attention because of the dramatic nature.By far the most common complication is a bad aesthetic outcome. Talk to your plastic surgeon.He or she should be reviewing general risks and benefits before your procedure.You will be requested to sign a consent saying that you have been told about the risks and benefits and that you understand these. It sounds like you're in the hands of a good doctor.There's not much you can do to prepare yourself in regards to minimizing complications.Most plastic surgeons ask patients to avoid taking aspirin, ibuprofen or any other medication or supplement that can change blood clotting.Being in overall good health and having any possible underlying medical conditions properly evaluated by your primary care physician or other doctors as indicated prior to elective surgery is about the most important thing you can do to prepare before the procedure.Having a healthy diet and being in good physical shape are also helpful to minimize the chance of having complications and tolerating the procedure well.Best,Mats Hagstrom M.D.
