Will a lower face lift perform a subcision of sorts? Will I still need a subcision for acne scars, or would it affect the lift?

Question

Having a lower face lift at the end of the year where I will also be getting fat transfer for volume and into my acne scars. My scars are somewhat tethered down. Do I need to bother with subcision prior to that surgery? Could it effect the face lift? Won't the actual procedure of the lift perform a subcision of sorts? Don't want to be counter productive or pay for something I don't need twice. Thanks

( . . . especially without photos), as it really can depend on the extent of your scarring. I have had very nice (and unexpected improvements) in both the depth of some skin lines and even scars, as well as color, occasionally (and fat grafting may help this as well). I would estimate that scars closer to the incisions might improve (be attenuated, or softened) more, but if "subcision" has worked well in prior problem areas, that may also still be necessary in spots, especially closer to the chin/mouth. Subcision would still need to be done as the face lift will not break up the scar tissue surrounding the individual scars. Subcision would still be needed. It will not affect the face lift. You need to consult with a Board Certified Cosmetic Dermatologist. Best, Dr. Emer.

Thanks for your question. Facelifts and subcision are designed to do two different things. Facelifts will address deep laxity of the tissues of the lower face and neck. Subcision is more of a surface treatment designed to help with surface scarring. You can achieve similar results with microneedling or laser resurfacing which can sometimes be done at the same time as a lift. Having subcision in advance of the lift won't affect the lift at all because again, they're doing two separate things. Hope this helps, and good luck!

A lower face and neck lift accomplishes tightening loose facial and neck skin, tightening loose facial and neck muscles,  removing fatty deposits in the neck and lifting the jowls. The facelift procedure will improve acne scars by simply stretching them.
