Are nasal corticosteroids (like Flonase or Nasacort) and/or antihistamines (like Allegra) safe to take before & after Botox?

Is it safe to use nasal corticosteroids (like Flonase or Nasacort) and/or antihistamines (like Allegra 180 mg) before and after Botox? I didn't want to take anything that impacts Botox functioning or causes adverse effects.

There should be no interaction between nasal corticosteroids or oral antihistamines with Botox.  So, in my opinion, it would be fine to have a Botox treatment while taking those medications.

In general there should not be any contraindications with corticosteroids, decongestants, antihistamines and Botox. Nasal decongestants such as SUDAFED may even be beneficial to the individuals that normally bruise easily. Be sure to consult your expert dermatologist or board-certified physician, and disclose your medication before injections.

in general those meds should be fine before botox.. what you dont want to take is things that make you bleed more like aspirin.

Can’t think of any reason this would be an issue. Minimize NSAIDs (aspirin, ibuprofen etc), any blood thinners, alcohol day of.

Hello and thank you for your question. The target for Botox (and other neuromodulators such as Dysport and Xeomin) is completely different from that for steroids (anti-inflammatory ) and antihistamines (blocks the action of histamine which is also involved in inflammation). Neither would affect the action or duration of Botox, and in and of themselves , although side effects are possible, most patients tolerate well without any adverse effects.

Thank you for your question.  There are very few medication limitations with the use of Botox.  Using medications like nasal corticosteroids or antihistamines should be fine to take before and after Botox.  They should not affect your results.  Regards, Dr. DiPasquale

I agree that corticosteroids and antihistamines should not affect Botox. The medications I typically ask patients to avoid before injections are blood thinners, such as Aspirin and Motrin, to help prevent bruising. Having said that, the needles used in Botox injection are the smallest; so bruising is negligible, if at all, even with blood thinners on board. Good luck.
