Does Massage Work on Scar Tissue After Rhinoplasty?

Question

Hi there i had open rhinoplasty 9mnths ago and have a tiny area of scar tissue around my nasal tip which is preventing it from settling as I wish. I don't want to have a revision or steroids as it really isn't that bad. Can anyone advise on massage techniques and if massage actually helps???

You should not do any massage on scar tissue after rhinoplasty. Massage will not do anything for the scar tissue in your nose at this time. You will probably need a revision  if you are not happy.

Plastic surgery scars require attention after surgery so that they remain cosmetically-appealing and barely noticeable. In our office, we use a protocol for scars that minimizes their activity in the 6-8 weeks after surgery. If you have late plastic surgery scars, you may also require laser and RF therapy to help reduce the longterm effects of the scarring. Keloids, hypertrophic scars, widened scars, red scars, and hyperpigmented scars all require scar modulation with topical creams followed by lasers and RF therapy. Topical skincare should be directed to a specific need, whether for pigmentation or hypertrophy and our office can guide you through the process to obtain the correct Plato’s Scar cream or Melarase cream for hypertrophy and discoloration. In terms of lasers, we would employ the vbeam laser for redness, Venus Viva RF, PRP microneedling, chemical peels, and Morpheus 8, fractional erbium, or fractional co2. All of these have their individual benefits. Most of all, we recommend you visit a solid plastic surgeon who understands surgical scar revision, laser therapy, and RF therapy for scars.

I would have your surgeon take a look at it. What I would not do is massage it. This may cause a shift in the nasal tip cartilages and  is not going to help with the scar tissue. A small steroid injection may help if done conservatively.

The most troublesome scar after rhinoplasty is just above the tip on the bridge of the nose. Steriods can cause skin issues, and massage and pressure over the area of fullness for 15 minutes or so with well lubricated skin is a good alternative which might help. After nine months, there is little chance of you "shifting" anything.
