What lip filler can I get injected that won't cause as many lumps and bumps?

I recently had my lips done with Juvederm Ultra plus and I had so many lumps and bumps that I had to get some parts dissolved. It was awful. I went to a very well known injector I found on RealSelf too. I'm assuming it's less risky to go with a different type of filler. Are there any fillers that cause minimal bumps and less swelling for the lips?

Hi mghazi11,Thanks for your question, but sorry to hear about your experience. Please don't lose hope -- it is definitely possible to get smooth, natural results with lip filler. I would say that the results usually depend more on the injector than the filler itself, but given your experience, it may also be worth trying a different filler for your peace of mind. There are a lot of great options these days, both in the Juvederm and Restylane families of fillers. I would schedule a consultation and talk to your provider about the options, so you can together decide which is best for you. Best of luck.

Thanks so much for reaching out. If you were worried about lumps and bumps and you may try a softer more pliable filler. Restylne is particularly soft and pliable. However I don't usually use it in the lips I think it doesn't last very long. I too usually use Juvaderm for lip injections however don't have problems with many lumps and bumps up. Often times you can feel lumps on the inside, but they should not be noticeable in the outside. I hope this helps :-)

Thank you for your question.  Sorry to hear about your experience.  In general, both Juvederm Ultra and Volbella would be excellent choices for lip augmentation.  Volbella is newly FDA-approved for lip augmentation and perioral rejuvenation.  It is a thinner product that can be injected more superficially without causing unwanted fullness.  Volbella might be a good choice for you.  Please be sure to see an expert injector for an in-person consultation to fully discuss your concerns and your goals and expectations in order to determine the best treatment plan.  Hope this helps and best wishes!

Thank you for your question mghazi11. I understand your concern. Juvederm is a hyaluronic acid filler designed to enhance the
appearance of the face. Lumps are normal for 2 weeks while the product is settling. At that point final results are seen. I massage products for my patients immediately after a treatment to decrease lumps. This can be performed at a later date as well. Please consult with a doctor for specific recommendations. There's a lot to say about this. Of course, Juvederm Ultra Plus (the filler you had) can yield excellent results in the lip area but, as with any filler, it can be lumpy if it's not done properly. There are some finer fillers, which are "finer" than Juv Plus, that may be better for patients with thinner lips, such as Volbella, Restylane Silk and Belotero. Depending on your anatomy, Juv Plus may be a great, or a not-so-great, fit. Be well.

Hello, very sorry that you have to experience lumps and bumps. Normally with a good technique it is very rare that it happens. Over the time the HA will absorb and the bumps/lumps should integrated into the skin slowly. You can massage in order help with the making it less apparent. 
  
Fillers for the lips normally are Juvederm ultra, volbella since are softer.

Thank you for your question.  I'm sorry to hear that you weren't happy with the results of your lip filler treatment with Juvederm Ultra Plus.  Generally speaking, it's not uncommon for any hyaluronic acid filler to form small firm lumps, immediately after injection - over the course of a few weeks, the product gradually absorbs water and softens, slowly integrating into your skin.  These lumps can be avoided with meticulous injection technique as well. 
Juvederm Ultra Plus is a relatively firm filler, and it may be worthwhile to try a softer filler product if you are particularly concerned about the possibility of lumps.  Volbella, Vollure, Restylane Refyne, and even Juvederm Ultra (as opposed to Ultra Plus) are all softer hyaluronic acid fillers, and will be less likely to feel firm in the lips than Ultra Plus.  I would recommend scheduling a consultation with a cosmetic dermatologist or plastic surgeon to discuss your concerns.  Best of luck!

Thank you for your question. I’m sorry that you did not have an optimal result with your treatment. All fillers have different characteristics (personalities) such as lifting vs plumping vs hydrophilic (water loving), etc. Juvederm Ultra Plus is very hydrophilic so will give lots of plumping. If that is what you are trying to achieve then it is a great choice. There are other better choices if you want more natural, subtle results. Juvederm Volbella is an option for the lips as it is a smooth gel that provides a natural, soft result. Restylane Silk is another great option for natural looking lips but it is important to keep in mind that your lips may be swollen with potential bruising for 2-3 days after treatment. It is best to schedule a consultation with a board certified dermatologist or plastic surgeon who has extensive training and experience in this field as the result is highly dependent on the technique and artistry of the injector. Communication with your physician is of utmost importance for most optimal, individual results.
