Follow-up question: Has anyone operated on someone with this with lupus and RA?

Question

I posted recently asking about a breast augmentation after already being diagnosed with Lupus and RA. I'm not sure ow to respond on the question. To clarify, I've seen two board certified PS. Both said it's not a problem, no reason to be concerned, as long as rheumatologist releases. And will have to stop Plaquenil and Humira for surgery. My question is, has anyone operated on someone with this dx and any complications? One said had to be saline, other recommended silicone. Also wondering about that?

Your procedure needs to coordinated and cleared with your doctors, ensuring that the chances having a healing related complication are low. Hello, thank you for your question. As long as you are cleared by your Rheumatologist and Primary care doctor, you should be able to proceed with surgery. The autoimmune disorder does not exclude your from surgery.

implants and autoimmune diseases. As long as your medical condition is stable
and adequately treated, it should be safe to have breast implants. Either saline or silicone implants are both O.K. to use.

a lot of plastic surgeons had a surgery on patients with RA or lupus. You will need to get a clearance from your doctor prior to surgery. If you are considering a surgery, I would suggest you to consult a board-certified plastic surgeon. Only after a thorough examination you will get more information and recommendations.

I have operated on several women over the years who had lupus and RA and did well. It is best to stop the Plaquenil prior to surgery. You will need your medical doctor's approval for the procedure first. Your doctor will be the best one to know if elective surgery should be done at this time.

I have operated on patients with Lupus and RA.  They have done well without any problems. Either saline or silicone gel implants are an option.  You would need clearance from your Rheumatologist.

If your lupus and RA are under control, cosmetic surgery is certainly feasible if there is good communication between your rheumatologist and your plastic surgeon. Medical reevaluation is recommended to ensure you are in optimal health. Clearance to proceed with surgery is required from your treating physician. Medications may require adjustment. Healing must be closely monitored. 
The choice between silicone and saline implants is up to you. There is no contraindication to the use of either type of implant.

what is important is that your autoimmune diseases are in a controlled phase. you should be required to get a clearance from your rheumatologist for surgery, and they can adjust any medication you are on for surgery. david berman md
