What are the benefits of general anesthesia versus local for facial fat transfer? Is it safe? Many surgeons offer both, and it is unclear to me which approach is more appropriate for a full facial fat transfer. Does the type of anesthesia affect fat quality or the likelihood of long-term fat retention?

Fat grafting is generally offered under local anesthesia with either an oral or IV sedative to make the experience more comfortable. Some physicians may also offer treatment under local anesthesia alone depending on the areas being treated. For full face fat transfer, many patients would consider some level of sedation a better choice. The type of anesthesia should not impact the result as long as the procedure is tolerated well enough to be performed in its entirety. Good luck!
