Is it normal to have prominent blue and purple veins around scar after steroid shot? (Photo)

Question

I had a tummy tuck October, 2018. I’m Latina so, of course, my scar started becoming a hypertrophic scar. To minimize this, my PS administered steroid injections on my scar in early January, 2019. Almost immediately after the steroid injection, I developed prominent blue and purple veins around the scar. It has been almost 4 weeks since I received the injections. The scar is no longer hypertrophic, but now I have these crazy veins. Is this normal? Will the veins ever subside?

Steroid injections are felt to be a benign procedure but rare complications or side effects do occur. The vascular changes you have developed can be treated if they persist. Discuss your options with your surgeon. They may include sclerotherapy injections and/or laser treatments.

Although steroid injections seem like a relatively straightforward procedure, they have many side effects on the local tissue. Tissue atrophy, or thinning, as well as vascular changes, are a common side effect. These are usually more or less permanent.

Thanks for your questions. Vascular deformity after steroid injection is a well known side effect of steroids. It’s likely permanent. However, there’s lasers and other treatments to eradicate the veins and you might be a good candidate for such procedures.

Hello!  Thank you for your question!  Unfortunately, there are goods and bads to anything that we do in medicine. For steroids, along with others, telangiectasias and other vascular issues are noted things that may occur after administration. These may or may not resolve. Discuss with your surgeon your issues and what could be done. Best wishes!
