Hi, thanks for your question. It would probably be best to get your BBL done when you have a break in your studies. Getting a BBL while you're a college student is probably better than when you're working as your time is more flexible. You'll need to take at least one week off following your surgery. You'll also have to avoid putting any pressure on your buttocks for at least 2 weeks, so no lying on your back or sitting on your bum. After which your surgeon may recommend that you don't sit on your bum for long periods of time, no more than 30 minutes at a time. Ultimately though, your surgeon will have his/her own pre and post-operative guidelines that you should follow carefully for best results and a speedy recovery. I highly recommend that you book an in person consultation with a board certified plastic surgeon in order to discuss all your questions and concerns.
Recovery from BBL is patient dependent. Much of this depends upon the amount of liposuction performed and the amount of fat transferred. I have observed that between 4 and 6 weeks the buttocks tend to stabilize in volume. Usually by 3 months, the swelling is minimal and totally resolved by 6 months. I recommend that my patients minimize sitting, even with a pillow (boppy or BBL), for the first two weeks. If they must sit, every 30 minutes or an hour, they should get up and stand for a few seconds to take the pressure off. This reduces the chance for fat necrosis. I usually recommend about 6 weeks before sitting without a pillow. After 6 weeks the fat has revascularized, and they will have a very good idea of their final results.Christmas vacation, time between quarters or semesters, or summer vacation might be the best time to schedule and recover from a BBL.
Dear wow_serenda,it is probably best to get it done when you have a break. I instruct my patients not to sit for 2 solid weeks. We provide them a specialized pillow that our patients can sit on during that time. They can sleep on their stomachs or sides. Fat viability depends a lot of surgeon technique. The fat has to be placed back into the buttocks as soon as possible so that it has a greater chance of survival. It has to be placed carefully so that not too much fat is placed in only one area.Daniel Barrett, MDCertified, American Board of Plastic SurgeryMember, American Society of Plastic SurgeryMember, American Society of Aesthetic Plastic Surgery
Hello dear!!Thanks for the question and provided information as well.I recommend my patients to allow 2-4 weeks for recovery, and to wait at least 7-10 days before going back to work/school, but each doctor has their own protocol. I also recommend not to sit for more than 30 mins. every two hours, for the first 2 weeks, and always with the help of a boppy pillow. Remember that each doctor has their own protocol, it is very important that you talk to him and follow his instructions.Hope this is helpful. Good luck :)
You could get your BBL over Christmas break or the summer. You need 10-14 days off so either would work great.
I would say getting a BBL while you’re a student will be easier than once you’re working. Most people can go back to daily low impact activities five days after the procedure. Those who feel they need a little more extra time may want to plan for a week off. Highly motivated people who do not let life slow them down could be ready in three days. Some surgeons may have specific protocols so you need to check with the doctor who’s going to do your procedure. Some providers may also want you to limit sitting for a certain number of days or use a BBL pillow. Sitting restrictions can be for as long as three days and this depends on each provider‘s protocol.Best,Mats Hagstrom MD
