It goes without saying that if you have side effects with propecia i would recommend stopping the medication and seeing your Doctor. In some males the side effects do go away with continued use and some side effects can persist with continued use. Generally those who stop the medication after suffering from side effects recover well. In a very small cohort of patients the side effects persist despite stopping the medication. 

The studies have shown that the side effects of propecia should go away with continued use in 60% of patients. However, there is an after market addition to the package insert that states that there have been reports of persistent side effects (post finasteride syndrome) even after discontinuation of the medicine. While this is rare it has been reported, so patients need to make an informed decision as to what to do. In my practice, we have used propecia with great success.

Thank you for your question. Propecia (finasteride) is a medication that reduces the conversion of testosterone to DHT. DHT is basically the follicle killer so stopping its effects will reduce or prevent hair loss. At the level of the scalp, DHT levels are reduced by 2/3 when taking Propecia. The side effects of Propecia should go away with discontinuing the medication but there are a small number of patients that report persistent side effects. Patients with pre-existing gynecomastia, erectile dysfunction and decreased libido are not good candidates for Propecia. We have had good success with a topical product called Revivogen MD. In some patients side effects do go away with continued use. Some patients however have reported persistent effects even long after the medication is stopped.

Some men report that after 2- 3 months, that the sexual side effects went away. What I tell my patients is to reduce the dose to one pill every 4th day for 2 weeks, then if it is better, change to one pill every 3rd week for 2 week and if it is still ok, go to one pill every other day and stop there as 50% of the dose is 80% as good as the full dose

In some cases, yes the side effects will go away after repeated use. However, it is my best advise that I can give is to try it and if you do suffer from any side effects...stop using it! A very small amount of men that use finasteride actually suffer from any side effects and it works to stop or at least slow down hair loss. So it is worth a try and if you feel anything out of the ordinary from it, stop using it and find alternative treatments.
