Can neck liposuction cause permanent swelling along the veins in my neck? (Photo)

Question

I had neck liposuction and a chin implant 5 weeks ago. My neck seems to be healing well, except there is swelling along my anterior neck vein that does not seem to be improving. When I tilt my head backwards I can feel a tight pulling sensation run down from my chin area through my neck along this specific vein. Could my chin implant be pushing down on my vein causing this ? Is there anything that can be done to bring down the swelling ? I appreciate any feedback.

Rigidity within the tissues treated can cause banding over a concave, such as the neck, area when trying to extend the head. It's more likely to be seen when the liposuction has been assisted by a laser or ultrasound. Fortunately this is almost always self-limited and will resolve one swelling subsides.

I have seen this type of outcome approximately eight times in the last 10 years.It is difficult to ascertain the exact etiology.I personally believe it is caused by thrombophlebitis or a blood clot formed in a vain.Typically, the scar tissue matures and gets better with time.Stretching and massaging are probably good ideas.I have seen other surgeons recommend ultrasound therapy, Botox injections, direct excision of scar tissue, steroid injections and other modalities.I would not be surprised if you get several opinions about your condition.Do you follow up with your plastic surgeon to see what he or she has to say about it.Best of luck,Mats Hagstrom, M.D.
