I had thigh lipo 10 days ago, my left leg is stiffer than right and I feel hard knots under the skin, and huge swollen lump (probably lymp-node) in inner bottom buttcheek/groin area. My doctor is on vacation, so he is not available to speak with, and I don't think his P.A. knows for sure if a lymphatic massage will prevent the area from having permanent bumps. Does massage just help one heal faster, or does it actually improve the final result by making smooth contouring? Is it just a gimmick?
Answer: Post Liposuction Swelling -- Lymphatic Massage, Hyperbaric Oxygen, Radiofrequency (Venus Legacy, Exilis, Vanquish), Cellutone First off I think its ridiculous you cannot get a hold of your physician after liposuction regardless if he is on vacation. that is just bad care in my opinion. secondly, you should be doing massage immediately post procedure along with RF tightening like legacy or exilis starting at 1-2 weeks. I suggest you see an expert. Best, Dr. Emer.

Answer: The Importance of Massage Hello and thank you for your questions! I do not think lymphatic massage is a gimmick by any means. I highly recommend daily deep lymphatic massage beginning done 24-48 hours after any liposuction procedure. Along with compression, lymphatic massage is very important to control and minimize swelling after liposuction. Lymphatic massage will help facilitate movement of the excess fluid (swelling) out of the liposuction areas and back to the lymphatic system, where it can be eliminated from the body. Deep lymphatic massage also helps prevent irregularities, including rippling, fluid buildup (seromas), and the hardening and contraction of scar tissue after liposuction. I strongly believe lymphatic massage is an important part of your post-operative care after liposuction to ensure the best possible outcome. As always, I would recommend you check with your surgeon for their specific recommendations on post-operative care. Best wishes to you on your recovery. Thank you,Andrew Jimerson II, MD

Answer: Does massage after lipo prevent rippling? 10 days p.o. There is no definite answer as to whether massage really helps after lipo or not. Some patients agree that there is an effect and some does not. It would be best to consult directly with your surgeon for his instructions.

Answer: Does massage help patients get smoother results after #liposuction? Many surgeons believe there is a value to lymphatic massage after liposuction; it may smooth the texture of the skin and reduce swelling, which often makes patients more comfortable and approach their final result faster. There have not been any studies of which I know that show a medical benefit to massage when compared to patients not receiving massage. For what it's worth, high volume liposuction centers in Miami and Latin America almost all include lymphatic massage as a significant postoperative recommendation for lipo patients.
