I'd like to get the mole from my forehead removed, what are my options? Will the scar be worse than the actual mole? (photo)

Big dark moles usually need to be removed by excision and suturing followed by light dermabrasion to the edges. It is all done under local and easy to undergo. The resulting scar can't help to be better looking than the mole in this case. Sincerely, David Hansen,MD

The mole would need to be surgically excised by either a dermatologic or plastic surgeon. By definition, it would leave a surgical scar. In my hands, I would likely close a wound in this area vertically and it would leave a vertical scar. With good surgical technique and assuming good healing, the scar would likely be preferable to the dark mole for most people. This is an area which moves a lot and using Botox in the glabella afterwards to reduce movement would likely help make the scar less noticeable.

Because of the size and location of your mole, it should be removed by excising a simple ellipse of skin. I then use a "layer closure" using both dissolving and non-dissolving sutures to give the best cosmetic result. The area then typically heals with a linear scar that is significantly less visible than your large, dark mole.
