1 day post Kybella injection, could I have nerve damage. Uneven smile and mouth crooked when I talk. Advice? (photos)

Question

Hi I had Kybella injected yesterday and immediately after the injection I felt a tense pull under my left and right side of my chin and the left side tendon in my neck was so tense that I could not smile on my left side. It got better after a couple hours but my smile on my left hand side is very lifted and when I talk with expression my mouth is crooked and I feel tension down my left side of neck pronouncing some words. How long will this last and will taking inflammatory medication help?

The paralysis should wear off with time as the nerve begins to regain it's function. This should take a few months, but won't be permanent.  You can try RF treatments like venus legacy and exilis ultra with steroids and neurontin to speed up the healing.  LED may also help.  Best, Dr. Emer

This can happen, and don't worry It will be temporary. You will regain your total nerve activity, just give it time.

Kybella (Deoxcholic Acid) is the first non-surgical, FDA approved injection to reduce submental fat. Some of the side-effects include bruising, swelling, redness, numbness and paralyzing the marginal mandibular nerve. Although the nerve usually regenerates itself in 4-12 weeks, I’d still advise you to follow up with your injecting physician.

In the original study leading to FDA approval, nerve damage like this happened in 4% or patients. Most resolve in only a few weeks. Only one of those took months, but that could happen. In no case was it permanent.
