I had traditional braces removed 10 years ago as a kid, with 2 permanent retainers on the top and bottom, but they did not prevent the formation of my open bite. I am most concerned about the left lower side, and would like to bring the bottom teeth up. The rest of my teeth are still straight and I am otherwise happy with my smile. How long does one typically need to wear Invisalign? a year?

It sounds like the tray is putting pressure on your gum tissue. The trays ideally should only place pressure on your teeth. I recommend visiting your orthodontist and having them take a look at what is going on. Most likely it is an easy fix by trimming some of the aligner.
Thanks for sending the photos. It looks like the fold is on the outside so it should not affect how the trays fit in your mouth. I would still contact your dentist and let them know but I would not necessarily worry about it
