I have crowded and slightly protruding teeth. Which is the best treatment? My dentist has suggested extraction of 4 teeth, and braces for 2 years. I am 25, female. Regular visits to the dentist won't be possible as I travel a lot. Is it possible to get the teeth straightened without extraction and braces? Is invisalign the right treatment? Is it possible to achieve even slight improvement with just retainers?

Please do not let anyone extract any teeth to treat you.  This would be completely unnecessary and would reduce the size of your dentition significantly.  You can be treated in just a few months by a dentist or orthodontist who is experienced in Invisalign therapy, and the results will be excellent.Invisalign results will differ depending on the provider you choose and you should insure that you have chosen one who has the correct level of experience.

it's my request to upload a side view photo with relaxed lips, so I can guide you for the extraction or not. but if your teeth are proclined, then extraction is the best option. 
as you said the regular visits are not possible, then Invisalign is the best option for you.
and for extraction cases, Invisalign is the best option.
