Hello, I am a 25 year old female. I have a history of alopecia areata and I also have rather thin Asian hair. Am I a good candidate for FUE? How many grafts would I need? Thank you!

If you have alopecia areata, hair transplant success rate might be low. Considering that 40-50 grafts per square centimeter can be grafted, 1000-1500 grafts would be appropriate for the area you marked.

Women typically need to have bloodwork and biopsy performed prior to considering hair transplant.  Forehead reduction is best completed with surgery to lower the hairline rather than adding more hair

Do you like to wear your hair pulled back?  If so, this could be traction alopecia - hair loss from tension placed on the follicles.  I would want to examine you before performing a transplant, but my guess is that 500-750 grafts would fill this area nicely.

I am questioning the shape of the hairline you are requesting based on the photo you provided. It seems very straight across for a female who generally have a more rounded hairline.  Thinner/ finer hair is more difficult to do FUE procedure compared t FUT. Most females will always have long enough hair in the donor area to cover the small thin scar left after FUT and you don't need to shave donor area to do the procedure like you would if you choose FUE. You most likely looking at 100-1200 follicular unit rafts depending on exactly where the hairline is placed.

This patient is requesting to lower her hairline minimally. Because she is a woman, it is important to get excellent density in this area. To do this, the very first 2-3 rows need to be single follicles and behind that would be grafts containing 2-3 follicles. In this patient it was recommended to use between 1000-1250 gratfts.

In general, hair transplantation is not the best option for treating hair loss due to alopecia areata since it is an autoimmune condition. Assumming a scalp biospy and bloodwork were normal hair transplant would be a good option to reduce the height of the forehead. approximately 1000 grafts would be needed to reduce the height of the forehead.

As you're looking to lower your hairline. You are for sure a good candidate for hair transplant. You would need approximately 2000-2250 grafts, thinner grafts with single or double grafts. Hairline design for women is trickier than men, because of the facial structure. We would design it in the clinic before the procedure and try different options.

If you truly have fine hair (as opposed to medium or coarse hair), then you will require more grafts and possibly a second session to get the fullness you want. Possibly 1200-1500 grafts or alternatively, a hairline advancement surgery.
