Is too much walking NOT GOOD 5 day post op from Breast Augmentation?

Question

I have been out and about all day moving around feeling really good. I started noticing that my left breast getting tighter and swollen maybe? I am now at home relaxing and hoping I didn't pull anything!! I'm not in pain or anything. Please some advice.

Typical walking for everyday activities should not disrupt your recovery or increased complication. If you feel that your breast is more swollen after your activities of daily living and I would definitely rest and contact your plastic surgeon.

Too much activity in the first two weeks of surgery can cause problems. I would advise you to follow your surgeon's activity schedule as swelling can increase with activity and you can also increase your risk of a hematoma for  10-12 days post surgery.Best of Luck,

Walking is good for you and is unlikely to be responsible for any breast tightness.  Unless of course you are doing power walking 5 days after surgery.

Michelle,Light walking after surgery is almost always good. In regards to your left breast concerns I would give your plastic surgeon a call. There are a few things that can be causing the symptoms you are having and its best to be seen to rule out the ones with consequences like hematoma or seroma vs just normal postoperative pain.I hope this was helpful,Dr. Daniel BarrettBeverly Hills, CA

You should really take it easy the first week.  Two simple rules for recovery:  If it hurts stop, if its sore slow down.  If the swelling is causing distortion of your breast, then contact your surgeon's office and discuss your issue with your surgeon.

Hello and thank you for your question. Walking around post operatively is within normal limits and is actually encouraged because it decreases your risk for DVT (deep vein thrombosis, i.e. blood clot) formation. I instruct all post-operative patients to maintain adequate breast support while up and walking around. The main restrictions following breast augmentation surgery are lifting and cardiovasular activities (which should be avoided immediately following surgery). Normal swelling with physical exertion is expected, however, if you notice at anytime a significant increase it is best to contact your plastic surgeon and schedule a follow up accordingly. Hi Michelle,Thanks for your question-- Too much of anything is not good after surgery (not too much exercise, and not being overly-sedentary).  It sounds like you just rushed things a little bit.  It's important to ease back into your regular routine, and to stick to your surgeons recommendations. You are correct on all accounts. You should not be over-exerting yourself 5 days after surgery for fear of stirring up some bleeding. You should take it easy and strictly follow your doctors orders.On the up side, it sounds like the tightness you describe is likely just swelling.
