Is it possible to have my nose shortened?

Shortening the nose with rhinoplasty is very simple to achieve yet surprisingly many surgeons fail to do this. In fact it’s one of the most common reasons for revision. It requires shortening the lower edge of the septal cartilage and nasal lining. This used to be a standard move in closed rhinoplasty but forgotten when many surgeons switched to open rhinoplasty.

 A rhinoplasty to shorten the nose can be done. This is quite often the case and should be no problem for an experienced  rhinoplasty surgeon. Look for an experienced rhinoplasty surgeon who does very natural noses.

Yes,  a closed rhinoplasty procedure can shorten the long nose. Closed rhinoplasty techniques can accomplish this goal with all the incisions placed on the inside of the nose. To shorten the nose usually requires reduction of the dorsal hump, lifting the tip, and releasing the depressor septi ligament in the tip which pulls the tip down even more with animation and smiling. Shortening the nose is often performed during rhinoplasty surgery. But you should never just fixate on just one issue. For instance maybe enlarging the chin would create a more attractive, better proportioned face with less shortening to the nose. Possible even no nasal shortening. I find computer imaging helps with visualizing which options would be best. Discuss this with a surgeon experienced in rhinoplasty.

Thank you for your question - this is a very common concern.Depending on the shape and size of your nose, it is possible to shorten it to improve facial harmony.  Narrowing the nostrils is also possible, and both can often be done simultaneously.  The key to a good result is to evaluate the entire face, and to strive for harmony - you want the nose to be a refinement of the nose that you already have, to unlock what's hidden inside, rather than a transformation.  It wouldn't be appropriate to give Lindsay Lohan's nose to Sylvester Stallone - similarly, you want your nose to still be "your nose" and not someone else's, otherwise it will be obvious that you had surgery one due to the resulting inappropriate proportions of your nose relative to your face.I suggest that you speak with an experienced rhinoplasty surgeon who shares your vision of what your nose should look like.  Best wishes.

Shortening the nose is almost always possible. There are anatomic limits and aesthetic limits to how much a nose can be shortened. The goal would be to shorten your nose to a point where it is balance and fits the rest of your facial features. A nose can be shortened, or deprojected. The amount will depend on your cartilage, bone and skin thickness.There are really no guidelines for percentages, but small physical changes may appear as a larger reduction than expected.Best to get a consultation with an experienced rhinoplasty specialist.
