Is it normal to have a stitch abscess 3 months after procedure? (Photo)

Question

I got a breast augmentation with benelli/donut lift in late August of this year. I had thought my healing was pretty well over, aside from the softening/settling aspect. About 2 days ago I noticed a little redness near the incision on my left breast. I woke up today to see what looks like a swollen pimple. After some research it looks like it could be a suture abscess... but I'm worried that it's more complicated because it's so late into healing... Do I need to go get it checked out?

Hi Cdnldn,Thank you for your questions and your photo. It certainly can be normal to have a suture abscess up to one year after surgery depending on the type of suture that was used like a PDS which can last up to nine months after surgery. I would recommend that you be examined by your plastic surgeon for peace of mind. In the meantime if you have no allergies I would recommend applying some Neosporin or bacitracin to the area. Thanks for your inquiry, depending on the type of stitch, sutures can spit for several months.  That being said, it is hard to advise from a picture your particular situation.  Most plastic surgeon are happy to evaluate their patients and put their minds at rest-- so please call your surgeon and best of luck.

but if you develop spreading redness, you need to see your surgeon as you could have something more concerning.  You should also ask your surgeon how he/she wants you to manage this so contact him/her.

It could be a stitch abscess but it might be the permanent suture that was used to keep the areola diameter from spreading. Best to check with your surgeon.
