It’s not essential but it does speed up recovery. In our practice we start the lymphatic massage day two. Always confirm with your primary doctor whether or not this is ok to do.Best of luck,Dr. Millard
Its not really lymphatic massage as you are open and the fluid build up is being physically drained out of you; whereas, lymphatic massage is done when the system is intact but the lymphatic drainage is retarded and fluid is getting lost in the space between tissue layers. The post-lipo care is essential in having satisfactory recovery not just speedy recovery. All patients develop seromas, most are deep and can't be easily appreciated and if not diligently drained, may create firm lumpiness. Actual lymphatic massage after the incisions are healed is contraindicated in post-lipo patients as it may increase inflammation and fluid buildup. The post-lipo care is best done from post-op day 1-10, daily and then 2-3x/week for the next 2 weeks to make sure all seromas are effectively managed.
