What are the consequence of lifting heavy weights and exercising too early after Breast Implant surgery?

Increasing your blood pressure and heart rate within the first 7-10 days after surgery does slightly increase the possibility of having unwanted bleeding and bruising. I typically ask my patients to refrain from aerobic exercise during the first week or so. After that, low impact exercise and isolated lower body and core exercise is allowed. I prefer my patients to avoid heavy lifting and upper body workouts for about 6 weeks. Upper body exercise can affect the implant positioning and negatively influence the natural softening and settling of the implants. You probably have not done anything that will cause you any issues. If you have concerns or symptoms or just want reassurance, a quick visit with your surgeon is helpful and usually welcome.

my patients to begin doing cardio 1 week after surgery, but I urge them to avoid
doing exercises that use their pectoralis muscles for 4 to 6 weeks. If you did
not feel significant pain, I think you will be fine. I advise my patients to
listen to their body. If after 1 week an exercise does not hurt, it should be
fine.

We ask our patients to avoid heavy lifting, straining and elevating their blood pressure in the first few weeks after surgery to minimize bruising, bleeding, pain and implant displacement. Follow up with your plastic surgeon to be sure all is well and review their postoperative regimen for exercise.

Figures activity questions activity after breast augmentation can irritate the muscle and calls pain that may be difficult to overcome.  It also can cause bleeding that can lead to a hematoma which will be detrimental to your long-term outcome. Please refrain from your vigorous activity and speak with your plastic surgeon

I have my patients wait about 6 weeks before doing any heavy lifting after an augmentation.  Light exercise is ok after 1-2 weeks.

The main concern with exercise too soon after surgery is the risk of a hematoma (bleeding). If you do not see or feel a difference in your breasts (pain, rapid swelling of one or both breasts) you likely did not do any harm. I would advise waiting to exercise again until your plastic surgeon gives you clearance. Of course, if you do experience any changes in your implant or pain, call your surgeon immediately. 

Exercising too early can increase your risk of developing complications, like capsular contracture. Capsular contracture may require additional surgery to correct. Even after surgery, your risk of developing it again increases as well. Keep an eye on your body and report anything unusual to your PS.

Each plastic surgeon should have information about their recommendations about working out following surgery, generally, this is discussed at your pre-operative appointment. Of course every scenario (backpacking) will not be included. It is important to follow the instructions of your surgeon. if you feel like you have done too much, too soon, contact your surgeon's office to sure you are healing as you should be.  

Good question. If your breasts feel the same and look the same then all is well. Seems that everyone has a different routine for the post-op restrictions and for differing reasons. Over the past 25 years I liberalized my restrictions to where for the past 10 years or so I only restrict patients for one week. After one week I allow them to do whatever they want without restriction. This does NOT mean they are ABLE and COMFORTABLE doing everything, just that they can decide what they want to deal with in terms of discomfort. This policy has NEVER yet been an issue over what is now thousands of patients.

Exercising too soon may lead to a hematoma. I have patients avoid heavy lifting for 6-8 weeks. Best to ask your surgeon. Good luck.
