Aftercare for textured implants?

Question

I was under the impression I was getting smooth surface implants so have done all my research on them but I've realized I have textured. How do I take care of them? I know you're not supposed to massage them but how do you ensure they soften? Can I encourage them to settle where I want them? Is there anything else I need to do/not do?

I do not recommend massaging the implants like a smooth implant. The tissue needs to heal into the textured implant. Be sure to follow the recommendation of your surgeon.Best of luck.- Dr. Bryson Richards

As opposed to smooth implants, textured implants require no displacement massage exercises after surgery. In fact this can lead to irritation between your tissues and the implant adherence causing fluid buildup which would be undesirable.Textured implants tend to stay in place better, minimizing implant malposition or descent over time. Consult a board certified Plastic Surgeon to see whether smooth or textured surface implants are the right choice for you.Good Luck.

Hello,  I'd recommend checking with your PS regarding their specific care advice.  In my practice I don't recommend my patients vigorously massage their textured implants (gentle massage is fine, if it improves comfort).  They will soften and the shape will improve as the postop swelling resolves.

Thank you for your question.  There is no special care needed for smooth or textured implants.  Massage is a complete myth. You can do it if it makes you feel better but it will have no effect on your final outcome.  Follow your surgeons advise.

Textured implants post op care is different than having smooth implants mainly in regards to massaging. Massaging is not recommended with texturized implants, massaging can increase the risk for fluid to accumulate, causing what is known as a seroma. Most patients associate not massaging with the potential increased risk for capsular contracture, but textured implants actually have a lower rate of capsular contracture occurrence.The implants may settle slightly after surgery, but not as much as smooth implants tend to settle, the textured surface prevents the implants from moving or migrating in the pocket.
