How soon after surgery should I start laser treatment to minimise and treat the scars?

Thanks for your question. I typically ask patients to wait for 2-3 months before having a laser resurfacing procedure.  Your surgeon may have different recommendations which you should follow All the best!

This is a treatment that I recommend to my patients, but no sooner than 8 weeks after your surgery. This is because this is the time the scars are in their remodelling phase. 

I typically tell my patients to wait at least a few months, but they need to be vigilant with sunscreen. Scarring usually isn't an issue. If you are having some visible scarring (and your surgeon agrees) then you can start treatment within a few weeks. 

Laser resurfacing is a useful adjunct in scar management, but I wouldn’t call them excellent in this regard. Some people respond well and some don’t. There is no agreement regarding the best time to treats incisions with the laser. I know some surgeons who do it when then scar is still new, and others who wait until of is fully healed (months later). This is an issue that I would discuss with your surgeon, realizing that there is no right answer.

Greetings,My feeling is that laser scar treatments are generally not necessary if incisions are closed meticulously and under minimal tension.  It should be acceptable to observe your scars for a period of time before any intervention is necessary.  Good luck!

I strongly feel that it's very important to have an honest conversation with your surgeon about your particular situation, lifestyle, work environment and specifically which procedures you're having done so that you both have the most honest answer about your recovery and are realistic with expectations and results.

Fortunately, especially in caucasians, facelift sar heal great without really having to do much at all. Scar treatment with Biocorneum, Mederma and even Vitamin E can be used as well. laser treatment works to reduce the redness in scars, though it will go away usually by 3-4 months on its own. Check with your surgeon about the best treatment for your surgery.

Thank you for your question! Scarring after a deep plane lift is rarely an issue. With appropriate wound care, your incisions should heal exceptionally well. Once you are a couple months out from surgery, you can consider the pulse dye laser for residual redness of the incision line, but this is rarely necessary. I hope that helps! Expert surgeons perform face lifts in a way to be sure there are no visible scars. I would advise you to schedule a consultation with a board certified plastic surgeon for a detailed examination to discuss all possible treatment options and what your expectations are. 

If the facelift procedure is done well and the tension is place on the deep tissues and not the skin, The scaring from the facelift is not an issue. Rarely a patient has a genetic predisposition to hypertrophic scars and the scars could be raised and red. In these cases a steroid injection would be the best solution. Lasers can reduce the redness in the scars, but time will do the same. I place the lip lift incision in the nostril to reduce the visibility of the scar and after hundreds of case I only know of one patient who had a red, raised scar who needed treatment.
