Doctors, is it normal to be extremely terrified of general anesthesia? I will like to have a breast augmentation procedure done with a board certified plastic surgeon but my research has revealed that majority of the top PS prefer to use general anesthesia only. Is it normal or common to have such an extreme fear of general anesthesia? Has any of your patients expressed such a fear for it? My fear is the loss of control and feeling that i may not wake up from it. I am a healthy 40yrs old woman.

It is not unsual to be fearful of having general anesthesia however as long as you are healthy it should be fine. You can also consult with your primary care to make sure you are healthy enough to undergo general anesthesia. Most board certified plastic surgeons use a board certified anesthesiologists. It is also important to find appropriate board certified plastic surgeon that you trust. Good luck.

Answer: Fear of general anesthesia Everyone is at least a little nervous before anesthesia, and some patients are terrified, as you are. That's not uncommon at all. For a patient of your young age and good health, anesthesia is EXTREMELY safe now if performed in a fully accredited surgery center by a board certified anesthesiologist. As I explain to my patients, their risk of having a serious problem is greater driving home from my office after the consultation than it is from the general anesthesia. In other words, the risk is not zero, just as it is not zero when driving your car, but the risk is so low that you should not really be overly worried about it as a realistic outcome. You probably don't think about not surviving every time you get in your car to drive, because the risk is simply so low.
