Hi, thank you for sharing your question. Liposuction isn’t a good weight loss tool but rather used to contour the body. It is unlikely that you can achieve a 22 pound weight reduction with liposuction alone. I hope this helps. Best of luck!
No.In an outpatient setting (i.e. not a hospital OR), the limit is 5 liters (4 l in some states like Florida). When liposuction is done in combination with a second procedure, the limit is 1 liter. These limits do not apply in a hospital setting. This is due to the fact that patients will be admitted and monitored overnight (thus allowing for better control of subsequent fluid shifts). This will amount to approximately 11 lbs. Ultimately, it is important to remember that lipo is a contouring tool and not a means to weight loss. It is best reserved for addressing those areas which have been resistant to diet and exercise. As always, discuss your concerns with a board certified plastic surgeon (ABPS).Donovan Rosas MDBoard Certified by the American Board of Plastic SurgeryMember: American Society for Aesthetic Plastic Surgery, American Society of Plastic SurgeonsRealSelf Top 100RealSelf Hall of Fame
Liposuction is a procedure for improving a person's silhouette. It is not meant for generalized weight loss. The amounts of fat removed does not correlate with weight loss. Most patients stay close to their normal weight after a typical liposuction procedure. Small amounts (on the order of 5 lbs, not 20) of weight loss can occur with larger volumes removed and a patient doing their part after with diet and eventually exercise.
Yes, it is possible but would be unsafe unless in very experienced hands, and is not indicated for weight loss. For body contouring the total amount could be removed in two staged procedures, for example, thighs, calves and ankles, 4-6 liters each time. This should not be done for weight loss, but if done by someone who understands fluid balance, knows how to monitor the patient closely, or even admits the patient to a facility for overnight monitoring, it can and has been done safely. Some states, like Florida, forbid it, because of safety concerns and deaths associated with outpatient liposuction. It is only for experts. Dr. Commons published his results 20 years ago and had a dedicated, experienced anesthesiologist and team.Plast Reconstr Surg. 2001 Nov;108(6):1753-63; discussion 1764-7. Large-volume liposuction: a review of 631 consecutive cases over 12 years. Commons GW1, Halperin B, Chang CC.Since the advent of epinephrine-containing wetting solutions and sophisticated fluid management techniques, increasingly larger and larger volumes of liposuction aspirations have been reported. Unfortunately, with these larger volumes of liposuction being routinely performed, greater rates of complications have also been reported, with the worst of these resulting in deaths. In a response to the increasing concerns over the safety of large-volume liposuction, a critical review of the senior author's own series has been performed to evaluate risks and benefits and to recommend guidelines for safe and effective large-volume liposuction. A retrospective chart review was performed on 631 consecutive patients who underwent liposuction procedures of at least 3000 cc total aspirate. All procedures were performed by the same senior surgeon between January of 1986 and March of 1998. Before September of 1996, traditional liposuction techniques were used. After September of 1996, ultrasound-assisted liposuction was performed. The superwet technique of fluid management was employed for all procedures performed after 1991. The particulars of the surgical and anesthetic techniques used are reviewed in the article. Data collection included preoperative patient demographics, preoperative and postoperative weights and measurements, and preoperative and postoperative photographs. Total aspirate volumes, fluid intakes, and fluid outputs were measured, and all complications were tallied. Average follow-up was 1 year. Results showed the majority of patients to be women, aged 17 to 74 years old. Of the preoperative weights, 98.7 percent were within 50 pounds of ideal chart weight. Total aspirate volumes ranged from 3 to 17 liters, with 94.5 percent of these under 10 liters. Fluid balance measurements showed an average of 120 cc/kg positive fluid balance at the end of the procedure, with none of these patients experiencing any significant fluid balance abnormalities. Cosmetic results were good, with a 2- to 6-inch drop from preoperative measurements, depending on the area treated. Ten percent of patients experienced minor skin contour irregularities, with most of these patients not requiring any additional surgical procedures. One year after surgery, 80 percent of patients maintained stable postoperative weights. No serious complications were experienced in this series. The majority of the complications consisted of minor skin injuries and burns, allergic reactions to garments, and postoperative seromas. The more serious complications included four patients who developed mild pulmonary edema and one patient who developed pneumonia postoperatively. These patients were treated appropriately and went on to have uneventful recoveries. The results show that large-volume liposuction can be a safe and effective procedure when patients are carefully selected and when anesthetic and surgical techniques are properly performed. Meticulous fluid balance calculations are necessary to avoid volume abnormalities, and experience is mandatory when performing the largest aspirations. Cosmetic benefits are excellent, and overall complication rates are low.
In the US you can only remove 5L of fat at one given time, liposuction is not a weight loss tool but rather a sculpting tool. If you want "weight loss" you can have multiple procedures done days/weeks apart or combine procedure with hormone treatment and peptide therapy for further improvement. You need a formal evaluation by an expert in body shaping and contouring to determine what is best. Traditional liposuction awake and smart liposuction are old methods and do very poorly for tightening skin or significant skin tightening or contouring. Small problem areas can be improved slightly by these methods. The best in body contouring not only removes fat with energy devices like VASER ultrasound but also internally heat the skin with radio-frequency devices such as J PLASMA/RENUVION, InMode BodyTite, ThermiRF to heat the under surface of the skin and tighten it at the same time as fat removal. These combinations are called 4D HIDEF VASER contouring and can only be done by a well . trained body contouring specialist. At the same time fat should be harvested, PRP and stem cells added and injected into muscles or indentations/cellulite to get body shaping and contouring. This is known as a Brazilian butt lift when you inject the fat to the buttock for contouring and lifting, but fat can also be used in areas such as the chest/breast, arms/shoulders, calves and face. Cellulite should also be treated with cellfina, sculptra, subcision and/or fillers such as bellafill, renuva synthetic fat, or sculptra. If skin is very loose before surgery then it will need to be removed such as lower abdominal skin (tummy tuck/abdominoplasty), breast skin (breast lift), arm skin (brachioplasty). Overall you need a full assessment, but simple liposuction alone will not tighten skin and needs a combination of various methods -- fat removal, skin tightening, defining, fat grafting, skin removal -- to get the best in body contouring and body sculpting. Hello,Liposuction surgery is not a means for weight loss as it is designed for body contouring (shaping). Ideal candidates fall within a healthy BMI, either of ideal or slightly overweight range. The amount of fat that can be safely removed depends on the individual's health, indications and the setting. In general, safety standards dictate removing less 5 liters of fat at any given session in an outpatient setting.Fat is very light in weight, and typically individuals notice significant improvement in their shape more so in inches than in pounds. Several liters of fat usually amounts to a few pounds of weight loss.Warm regards,Dr. Pedy Ganchi. Village Plastic Surgery
Thank you for your question. We are allowed to remove up to 5 liters of fat at one time. Each surgeon will have their own protocol. I would recommend seeing a Board Certified Plastic Surgeon in person. Best of luck to you.
Liposuction should not be looked at as a weight loss tool. It is more for contouring areas and making them smaller. Your average liposuction patient will lose a few pounds, but it would be very dangerous to remove that amount of weight via liposuction. That would be roughly 10 liters of pure fat, and trying to remove that amount with liposuction techniques would cause massive fluid shifts in the body leading to severe complications. Weight loss before liposuction is always the way to go. I hope this helps
Hello, thank you for your question. While you can liposuction several areas at once there is a limit to how much fat can be removed safely. Risks from liposuction increase significantly when over 5 liters of fat are suctioned out. We usually stay below this limit for patient safety. We’ve found that we’re able to achieve dramatic improvements for our patients with 2 to 4 liters of liposuction, depending on their needs. I recommend you to schedule a consultation with a Board Certified Plastic Surgeon for proper evaluation.
I would like to look at liposuction more for body contouring than weight loss. Liposuction is a great procedure for patients who are at or near their goal or stable weight but have trouble areas. If we are looking at weight removal, in theory if 5 L liposuction is performed (limit of lipo done safely) there can be about 10-11 lb weight loss. However, this does not always translate into real world scenario. There is a fair amount of fluid gain immediately after liposuction and commonly if a patient is to weight themselves right after the surgery the scale may tip the other way.Ultimately, as I said earlier I would look at liposuction as a tool to help contour the body more than a weight loss procedure.Hope that helps.
