How long does it take to clear hematoma? (photos)

Hello,You need an operation to clean out the blood. You are in jeopardy for almost certain capsular contracture or even an infection.  The drain will clot, if it already hasn't, and increase the risk for translocation of bacteria into the implant pocket. If your doctor isn't an ABPS certified/ASAPS member surgeon, you should perhaps seek attention from one who is. Thanks for the question. In my practice, after performing a BA I recommend to my patients to limit the movement of the arms for two weeks. After that, you can move your arms taking care and always with common sense. In this regard, it's not advisable to carry heavy weights to prevent the implant out of position, and allow the formation of the physiological capsule around the implant, also to avoid pain and breast swelling. Kind regards

Yes, it looks like you do indeed have a hematoma on the right. I'm not sure about your left breast. One option is to use a drain, but more commonly hematomas have to be evacuated in surgery and completely cleaned out. If your hematoma continues to be symptomatic you should let your plastic surgeon know about it. It is impossible to know when and if the hematoma will resolve via a drainage tube. Sorry that you are having problems.  The best treatment for a hematoma is to open the incision, wash out the blood, and replace the implant.  This is the best option to reduce the risk of capsular contraction.  Best regards.

More details are needed. Did you have the hematoma washed out and then a drain placed?  If so, when the drainage is low your surgeon will remove it. This often occurs within the first week or so.

are vexing problems but  in general, its best to go back to the OR, stop any bleeding/oozing, and wash out the pocket.  If your breast continues to increase in size, this is what you need.  If not, you can stick with the drain but if you get a contracture down the road, you should ask your surgeon what kind of revision policy will apply to you.

Your doctor is safely draining the blood with a suction drain.This blood will take time to liquefy and come out the drain.It will be bloody in the beginning and turn to yellowish seroma before it stops.Your doctor will take out the drain when the blood has safely been metabolized.

Hello. A hematoma is a challenging issue. Sometimes it will drain on its own, but the risk is infection. Small hematoma will absorb, but can lead to some mal-postion of the implant -- or thicker capsule. The best thing to do is stick with your plastic surgeon and follow her advice.Good luck.

In my experience, clot retraction and liquidification of a hematoma of moderate size may take anywhere from 10 days to two weeks. The fluid that remains is usually more of the color of chocolate syrup and would never completely clear up. In my opinion, it's best to remove all of the blood clot as it becomes a fertile ground for bacteria to grow as well as irritate the early formation of a capsule possibly making it thicker. It's very simple after liquification takes place, to put a liposuction cannula into the pocket and drain all of the bloody fluid. Certainly, you should follow the advice of your opertaing  surgeon as there many  different opinions on this topic. Best of luck.

I'm sorry about the problems you're having.  You cannot be adequately be treated via this forum so you'll have to remain under the care of your own PS, although you can consider another opinion from a BC surgeon who can examine you in person.  I am concerned about your hematomas.  They may resolve on their own but if blood is allowed to resorb on its own (depending on the amount) there is a greater risk of capsular contracture.  In the short term, leaving blood there can increase the risk of infection and related wound-healing problems.   I would normally advise, for significant hematomas (which cannot necessarily be diagnosed online) a return to the operating room, removal of the implants, evacuation of the hematomas, irrigation and cleansing of the pockets, and then reinsertion of the implants, typically with drains.  Whether or not this is appropriate for you is difficult to say via this forum.  Contact your PS and, if necessary, another one to have your condition(s) assessed and appropriate treatment recommended, if indicated.  I hope that this helps and good luck.  Dr. Alan Engler, Member of #RealSelf500
