I have bulging eyes, big in size. Sometimes it looks odd to me and others. It has been that way since I was born and my mother too has big eyes (slightly smaller than me, though). I was wondering if this is any bad and if I could get my eyes better fit inside the cavity. I am apprehensive of surgery as I am not aware of the expenditure in terms of time and money and also the risk involved, if any. Is it bad, as it appears in the picture ?
Answer: I have bulging prominent eyes, I don't know if it is normal Thank you for your question and images. If you have had a similar appearance since birth then it is unlikely that there is any underlying medical condition to be concerned about but a personal consultation is required to give the best opinion. It does appear that a reduced orbital volume may be a predisposing factor and something that in the medical literature defines as exopthalmos. Functionally it can be an issue if you have exposure of the cornea and associated problems such as dry eye etc. If this is the case then you should seek an early review. There are may to increase the orbital volume that can be done with fracturing the orbital floor or using orbital rim implants to increase the relative volume and reduce the eye prominence. I offer custom designed rim implants as a treatment options for cases such as yours. In short there are options for you and seeking an Specialist Plastic Surgeon with experience in craniofacial surgery will aid in exploring your treatment options.RegardsDr Guy Watts

Answer: Small Orbit vs Thyroid Disease Thank you for sharing your question and photos. You probably have an inherited condition with shallow orbits. If the space in the orbits is diminished, the eyes protrude. Similarly, thyroid disease can lead to increased volume in the orbits, causing the eyes to be pushed outward. You need a comprehensive in person evaluation by an Oculoplastic Surgeon for management. Good luck.

Answer: Inherited bulgy eyes Your bulgy eyes is likely inherited in nature but best to see an oculoplastic specialist for evaluation. The good news is treatment is possible through orbital decompression to reduce the eyeball prominence. See link below.

Answer: Bulging Eyes Thanks for your post. It seems like you have what we call a "shallow" or "tight" orbit. This is usually a genetic thing that may go along with your cultural background. Thyroid conditions can also contribute to a bulging appearance. Make an appointment with an oculoplastic surgeon to discuss your concerns and begin thinking about ways you would like to improve your appearance. Good luck!

Answer: Are bulging eyes normal? Prominent or "bulging" eyes are very common and probably normal in your case, especially with the history of being life long and having a family member with the same trait. Surgery is not usually recommended for this type of condition unless it is associated with a vision problem caused by a medical condition that cannot be controlled. It is always wise to have a thorough eye exam by an ophthalmologist and address any medical problems if they are present.John Standefer MD
